Coffee in skin care and beauty

Coffee in skin care and beauty

Coffee has been enjoyed for hundreds of years, and naturally along the years people have come up with other ways to use coffee besides drinking it. When brewing coffee, you always end up with a pile of coffee grounds that end up in the compost. What if you could re-use the coffee grounds, and simultaneously replace part of your expensive cosmetic products?

Coffee has been used in beauty products for long, since people noticed, that coffees components are easily absorbed into the skin. At the same time, they give out natural antioxidants that brighten and reinvigorate the skin and the caffeine in coffee brightens out your complexion. Coffee is also excellent in peeling skin, which is known for enhancing the renewal of skin cells.

Almost every household has coffee drinkers and even if you don’t enjoy coffee, you can use it straight from the bag to make beauty products. Below, we have written some of our favorite recipes at Slurp. These recipes are proven to be good and easy to prepare at home or at the summer cottage, enjoying the sun by the lakeside.

FACE

The skin of your face can often feel red and stuffy. On top of that, the summer and UV-rays can take a huge toll on the skin. People who do more sports know, that due to the excessive sweating, one can feel like their skin needs some refreshing.

Relaxing coffee facial

2 tbsp freshly ground coffee or used coffee grounds
2 tbsp dark cocoa powder
2 tbsp milk or yoghurt
1 tsp lemon- or limejuice
1 tbsp honey

Mix the ingredients and apply to your face. Let dry for 15 minutes. Remove using a moist towel.

Renewing under-eye mask

1 tbsp freshly ground coffee or used coffee grounds
1 tbsp olive or coconut oil

Mix a paste from finely ground coffee and olive- or coconut oil. Apply under eyes, let it dry for approximately 10 minutes and rinse it off. (Be careful not to apply too close to eyes!) This product should stay usable for up to a month, if kept in an airtight container.

Refreshing facial scrub

3 tbsp freshly ground coffee or used coffee grounds
1 tbsp of oil (olive, rapeseed, coconut, almond)
1 tbsp brown sugar

Mix the coffee and sugar. Add the oil into the dry ingredients. If necessary, add sugar, depending on the scrub consistency you want. Apply to face with gentle, round massaging motions. Rinse off with water. This product should stay usable for up to a month, if kept in an airtight container.

HAIR

Softening hair mask

3 tbsp freshly brewed coffee
3 tbsp tepid water

Brew coffee and let it cool. Add water. Apply the mix to your hair and let it sit covered for 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. We do not recommend this for light or bleached hair, as the coffee may temporarily darken the hair color.

BODY

Clearing body scrub

2 tbsp freshly ground coffee or used coffee grounds
2 tbsp of natural yogurt
1 tbsp sugar

Mix the coffee and natural yogurt together and add the sugar. Apply to body with gentle, round massaging motions a´starting from the feet up. Let the mask soak in for approximately 15-20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and enjoy your clearer and brighter skin. Coffee removes dead skin cells, and renews skin, which in turn prevents cellulite from forming and also helps with existing cellulite.
