The popularity of bean coffee is growing all the time, and no wonder, as it is an undeniable fact that coffee tastes best when freshly ground. After grinding, the coffee starts to lose its flavour, which is particularly pronounced when making espresso. Coffee beans are the seeds of coffee beans. Each variety of coffee bean looks slightly different. The bean’s appearance is also influenced by the location and other growing conditions. In some countries, such as Kenya, beans are classified according to their size. In general, the largest beans are considered to have the best flavour.

Separating the pulp from the beans is called coffee processing. Coffee processing methods include washing (washed), sun-drying (natural) and a mixture of the two (pulped natural). After processing, the coffee beans are dried and, in most cases, sorted according to size and quality.

Raw coffee beans are greenish in colour. They are packed in jute bags for transport. A plastic bag is placed inside the jute sacks to prevent the flavour from sticking to the beans. In practice, therefore, the purchase of green coffee is always made in one jute bag, typically containing 70 kg of coffee beans.

Coffee beans taste best when freshly roasted and ground.

Different roast levels.

Roasting turns the beans brown and slightly larger. The compounds and aromas in the coffee beans develop during roasting and give the coffee its flavour. Roasting loses about 10% of the weight of the coffee beans, which the roaster must take into account when pricing the coffee.

The roasted beans are packed in an airtight coffee bag. The bags are fitted with one-way valves, as the newly roasted beans continue to release carbon dioxide for several days after roasting. The one-way valve lets the released carbon dioxide out, but does not allow air to enter the bag. This is the basis of the design of SLURP packs.

Finally, the coffee beans are ground before the coffee is extracted. The shorter the time from grinding to brewing, the better.
