When the passion for coffee emerges, it is impossible to destroy. The idea of working with coffee and roasting coffee yourself can come while travelling the world on a motorcycle. When one has the opportunity to visit different places and sample the various flavors of coffee, it is natural to have a passion to learn more and be able to provide coffee experiences to others.

Coffee shop, Roastery, Coffee Academy

Pekka Heinonen from Pirkanmaan Paahtimo

The Fresh Coffee roastery, founded in 2007 in Toijala, started their roasting with a used Probat, that they bought from Peters Coffee after it closed down. In 2010 the roastery moved to Tampere, and after a fire in 2011 the roastery operation moved to Sarankulma. They purchased a brand new 25kg Probat and the roasting operation continued under the name Pirkanmaan Paahtimo.

In 2005 Teijo Villa founded the Cafe Solo coffee shop with a small attached roastery in Puuvilla, Pori. Villa used the roastery exclusively to roast coffee for the needs of the coffee shop and test different roast methods. In 2013 Cafe Solo and Pirkanmaan Paahtimo merged to create the Coffee Academy, specialized in testing different roast methods to high quality origin coffees and offering training days in roasting, barista skills and different filter brewing methods.

The three roasters

The eldest roaster in Pirkanmaan Paahtimo is Teijo Villa, who has been an ambassador for sustainable coffee since 2002. Villa started roasting in Cafe Solo as early as 2005.
