Coffee grows in the Guji region of Ethiopia at an altitude of over 2000m in a nature reserve. Many of these wild coffee bushes are unique and there are no similar coffee varieties growing anywhere else. Due to the atypical genetic make-up, the coffee has very atypical flavours. As the forests are protected by the state, the smallholders in the area are more like stewards of the land than smallholders in their own right.
